  1. Prevention tools: Substitution for Innovation

This interactive session introduces participants to a suite of tools developed by ChemSec and Stockholm University that are focused on chemical substitution, and have been applied to PMT/vPvM substances especially PFAS. Participants will learn about:

  • the PFAS Guide which is designed to help businesses identify, track, and phase out PFAS in their products and supply chains,
  • the SIN (Substitute It Now) List which is an extensive database of hazardous chemicals that pose significant threats to human health and the environment and acts as a proactive guide for companies wanting to phase out dangerous substances before they are legally banned,
  • Market Place which is a free online platform that connects buyers and suppliers of safer, hazard-free chemical alternatives
  • the ZeroPM Alternatives Assessment Database where safer chemical alternatives can be found for PFAS across a range of uses.

The short course will show how these tools are connect and can support real-world decision-making. Participants will put the tools into practice by working through a fictional substitution scenario tailored to their role (e.g. regulator, downstream user, or innovator). Please bring your laptop, as you’ll need it to follow along.

2. Prioritization Tools: Finding persistent and mobile substances, and transformation products for substances on the global chemical inventory

Come and learn about the ZeroPM database featuring the Global Chemical Inventory (GCI), and ways to identify persistent and mobile substances listed in inventories in different regions. Learn about FAIR-TPs and the GCI-Transformation Product (GCI-TPs) databases, which feature ways of identifying documented and predicted transformation products (TPs), with a particular focus on potential dead-end TPs that may also be persistent mobile substances. We will also present on how to screen these dead-end TPs in wastewater samples.

In this short course, the databases developed in the ZeroPM project will be showcased with a presentation and interactive demos

3. Prioritization tools: Risk Assessment

In this short course, participants will be given a demonstration of the tools developed and applied within the ZeroPM risk-based prioritization framework for PM substances in drinking water. These tools cover

  • Exposure estimation, using a newly developed fugacity-based model for groundwater exposure
  • PBK modeling to calculate exposures into free internal plasma concentrations
  • Hazard estimation, using a combination of new approach methodologies (NAMs)
  • VIVD modeling to calculate nominal  exposure concentrations to free concentrations in NAMs
  • Risk-based prioritization, by comparing estimates for exposure and hazard in a visual matrix communication tool

The course will allow for one-to-one discussions with the responsible ZeroPM researchers.

4. Removal tools: Monitoring, analysis and pilot scale remediation

Within this short course, participants will see how passive sampling can be used as a tool to monitor very low aqueous concentrations of persistent and mobile substances such as PFAS, triazines and triazoles. Different types of devices will be shown and field data will be presented from the ZeroPM test sites in Greece and Germany. Following this, participants will see whether the persulfate-based total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay really is a top assay for analysing sum PFAS in environmental samples. The short course will present principles, methodological progress, methodological application for aqueous and solid matrices. Participants will see examples where the TOP assay is a versatile tool, and examples of where it can fail. Finally, focus will be given to the occurrence of PFAS in sewage sludge and their fate during conventional sludge treatment processes. Participants will see how ZeroPM constructed and operated the pilot-scale treatment system that was developed for PFAS removal from sewage sludge. The course will highlight treatment efficiency, key operational considerations, and the potential for implementing advanced sewage sludge treatment methods for PFAS.
